The Ontological Explanation of the Māheśvara-sūtras Revealed in Nandikeśvara-kāśikā

1. a-i-u-ṇ(the manifestation of the universe/unmeṣa)

a= the immanent ultimate reality/anuttara

i= the limiting desire/icchā

u= the manifested limited world/unmeṣa

2. ṛ-ḷ-k (the sameness of the ultimate reality/tādātmya)

ṛ= the ultimate reality/paramaśiva

ḷ= the limitative element/māyā

3. e-o-ṅ (the combination of the ultimate reality/samanvaya)

e= (a+i) the combination of the ultimate and limitative element/akṣarātmaka and māyātmaka

o= (a+u) the combination of attribute-less and attributive/nirguṇa and saguṇa

4.ai-au-c (the ultimate reality as the cause of the universe)

ai= (ā+ī) again combination

au=(ā+ū) again combination

5, 6. ha-ya-va-ra-ṭ & la-ṇ (the five tattvas of materiality/pañcamahābhūtas)

h = space/vyoma

y= wind/vāyu

v= water/ap

r= fire/tejas

l=earth/pṛthivī

7. ña-ma-ṅa-ṇa-na-m (the five tattvas of sensible experience/pañcatanmātra)

ñ= sound/śabda

m= touch/sparśa

ṅ= colour/rūpa

ṇ= flavour/rasa

n= odour/gandha

8, 9. jha-bha-ñ & gha-ḍha-dha-ṣ (the five organs of action/pañakarmendriyas)

jh= organ of speech/vāgindriya

bh= organ of handling/pāṇi

gh= organ of locomotion/pāda

ḍh= organ of excretion/pāyu

dh=organ of sex/upastha

10, 11. kha-pha-cha-ṭha-tha-ca-ṭa-ta-v (the five types of breaths and the three mental operations/pañcaprāṇa and antaḥkaraṇatraya)
