परुष्ण्यष्टकम्
Paruṣṇyaṣṭaka 

The Hymn of River Ravi (Written by me) 

महेशदेशशौचदा महेशदेवसाचिनी
महेशशेखराशुचिर्महेशजानिजन्यजा।
त्रिगर्तमद्रगोब्दिकप्रदेशवाहिनी धुनी
स्रवेत्स्वसूसमास्रवस्य संस्रवस्य सायिनी॥१॥

1. The river, the purifier of the land of (Mai)-Maheśa [Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh] who assists the God, Maheśa, who is as pure as Gaṅgā, who is Maheśa’s wife’s father’s daughter, who flows through the countries of Trigarta (eastern Punjab), Madra (central Punjab) and Gobdika (Gaddi), who destroys the association of the distress of earth, may flow.


नमामि शैलजामिरावतीं दृषत्प्रसाधितां
गिरीन्द्रशृङ्गसम्भवां प्रतीच्यदेशपावनीम्।
लवस्य स्थानके प्रवाहिणीं सरिद्वरां शुभां
त्रिगर्तदेशपालिनीमहं सुरीं मुहुर्मुहुः॥२॥

2. I, again and again, bow to Goddess Irāvatī, the eminent and auspicious river, the daughter of the mountain, adorned by pebbles, originated from the peak of the Himalayas, purifier of the western part (of India), flowing through the city of Lava [Lahore], nourishing the country Trigarta. 


अमर्त्यकृत्यदित्यपत्यहत्यतीच्छकृत्तिका-
सुताय पञ्चवाहमध्यभूतया सुतोयया।
गणो गुहाय सम्प्रदत्त एतया प्रशस्तया
भुवस्तु भूरितीर्थभूरिपल्लिवल्लियातया॥३॥


3. (Irāvatī), this excellent (river) having nice water, the central among the five streams (of Punjab), who passes by many pilgrim spots and many villages of the earth while flowing through the earth, gave an attendant to Guha [Kārttikeya], the son of the Kṛttikās and who was very eager to kill the son of Diti and (this killing) was to be done by the Devas.  


त्रिगर्तदत्तनीरचारुतीरजीरवारये
पुरूरवोमनोहराभिरूपदिव्यमूर्तये।
प्रणीतपुण्यवेणये च चन्द्रभागया समं
हिमाद्रिसृष्टमाद्रभद्रसार्द्रवायवे नमः॥४॥

4. Obeisance to (Irāvatī), who gives water to the Trigarta (people), whose banks are beautiful and water is forceful, who has the divine and pleasing form that attracted  Purūravas’s mind, who made the auspicious confluence with (river) Candrabhāgā, who is originated from the Himalayas and gracious towards the people of Madra and who makes the wind moist. 


पवित्रसेभ्यवारि चम्पया पुरैधितश्रिय-
स्त्रिगर्तमद्रगोब्दिकास्सदाऽऽप्नुवन्ति मानवाः।
वृताभिमानिवह्निपुत्त्रधिष्णुसंश्रितर्तयो-
रुदग्रशैलराजमध्यभागवर्त्मसंस्थिते:॥५॥

5. Those people of Trigarta, Madra and Gobdika always obtain the pure and cool water from (river Irāvatī) whose beauty is increased by the city of Campā (Chamba, Himachal Pradesh), who got married with the abhimānin [āhavanīya] fire and produced (their) offspring Dhiṣṇu, where the Ṛtayus [the persons observing the sacred law and wishing for sacrifice] resorted and whose location is amidst the passage of the central part of the high Himalayas.    


इरावतीति सञ्ज्ञया वसुन्धराशुचीकृतः
प्रपन्नचान्द्रभागजीवनोच्छ्रितेर्महाधुनेः।
द्विपो निसृष्टसङ्क्रमध्वनेः प्रयाणवाहनः
प्रदत्तसंश्रितेश्च रूपधाररूपिविष्णवे॥६॥

6. The great river, who is the purifier of the earth with the name Irāvatī, who effects the increase of the water of (river) Candrabhāgā, who sounds while flowing and who gives the residence to Viṣṇu in his form of Rūpadhāra, has the elephant as her vehicle.


सुदास इन्द्रवारितं नृपस्य मज्जनं पुरा
पुरन्दरोद्धृतारिकॢप्तकूलभेदसम्प्लुतौ।
विपश्चितोऽत्रिनामकस्य चाश्रमोज्ज्वलीकृति
पुराणवेदसुप्रसिद्धसार्वकालिकस्रुतौ॥७॥

7. Long ago, the sinking of the king Sudās was prevented by Indra in (the river Irāvatī), whose flood, caused by the breaking of her banks by the enemies (of Sudās), was extricated by Indra, who makes the hermitage of a sage, Atri by name, splendid, who is very popular in the Vedas and the Purāṇas and whose flow is there at all times. 


इरावति त्रिगर्तदेशतोयदे महाजले
सुनिर्मले फलप्रदात्रि मद्रसीमकल्पिके।
परुष्णि पर्वतेशजेऽम्ब गोब्दिकप्रवाहिणि
त्वमत्र देवि सुप्रतिष्ठ मानसे ममानिशम् ॥८॥

8. Oh, Irāvatī! the water-giver of the Trigarta country, possessing abundant water, the very pure one, the bestower of (good) result, the definer of the boundary of the Madra (territory), oh mother Paruṣṇī! the daughter of Himālaya, flowing through Gobdika (territory), oh Goddess! may you reside perpetually in my mind.  




परुष्ण्युपासनानिमित्तमेतदष्टकं सकृन्
नरेण येन सौस्मितेयदीप्रबद्धमत्र वै।
अधीयते महाधुनीगुणावलिं निधाय च
मनस्त्विरावतीवरेण तस्य निर्मलं भवेत्॥९॥
9. Certainly, the mind of the person, who reads this aṣtaka (even) once composed by Deepro, the son of Susmita in order to worship Paruṣṇī recalling the qualities of the great river at once, becomes pure with Irāvatī's boon.
